The language of Dante resounds in Amman

The Amman committee of the Società Dante Alighieri aims to enhance cultural understanding between our two countries and create a valuable hub for the Italian community in the Kingdom of Jordan. The essence of Italian identity has been shaped by exchanges with various cultures and civilizations around the Mediterranean Sea.

Without inconveniencing Dante and the Divine Comedy, we all recognize Arabic influences in the Italian language reflect the deep historical ties between the Levant and Europe.

The bond between Jordan and Italy traces back to the efforts of Italian diplomats, archaeologists, doctors, artists, writers, and clergy who have visited, worked, and contributed to Jordan since the early 1900s.

The promotion of the Italian language in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan began by introducing our lange in the Catholic schools and later locate state universities. The fascination of Jordanians with the Italian culture and Italy reached its peak in the 1980s, when numerous young Jordanian students pursued education in Italy. Many of them formed families and returned to Jordan, contributing to the growth of the Italian-speaking community in the country.

Nowadays, the Italian language is taught at the Società Dante Alighieri as well as in various local state and private universities and schools.

The rich Italian cultural, creative and scientific heritage has consistently served as a significant point of reference for this young nation, which strives to blend innovation and tradition to enrich its own cultural landscape.

The committee aims to enhance the points of contact between the two countries through cinema, art, fashion, cuisine, music, design, and technology.
